Preseason Week 1: Dallas Cowboys @ Los Angeles Rams (ESPN) Preview

Quarterbacks

Coming off an injury plagued 2015, Tony Romo will not play tonight. However, it is certain that Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers will play and he will be there to help them out. With a combination of many members of the second team offensive line of the Cowboys, and the first team offensive line of the Rams, there should be a bit of scrambling. Dak will show just how good he is at hitting the second or third read and in taking off as well.

Running backs/Fullbacks

Ezekiel Elliott’s long anticipated debut will be delayed, as Ezekiel Elliott and Darren McFadden are out tonight. It is clear that Alfred Morris and Darius Jackson will get a lot of time. How they will run behind some of the elite Cowboys linemen that our playing in live action will be previewed in this game. Look for a lot of Darius Jackson. In my opinion, he will play very well, make the practice squad or the 53 man roster as the number 4 this season, and he will be a very good contributer next season. That is why this preseason is important to him, it could be his only chance to show off in a what he has in a real NFL game. Darius should figure to get at least 10-15 carries. This preseason is also important for the transitioned running back to full back and the brother of second round pick Jaylon Smith, Rod Smith, and the transitioned linebacker to fullback Keith Smith. It will decide who is the starting fullback. Rod Smith will also get the ball handed off to him from the running back position.

Wide receivers/Tight ends

Dez Bryant will show he is back tonight! Dez and Dak will develop grat chemistry from the start. Dez is back! Brice Butler should get some first team looks and Andy Jones will be ready to play. Look for Andy and Dak to connect all day long, Andy Jones is a favorite to be a preseason breakout player. He looks like he could be lining up to play a Laurent Robinson type of a role. I am looking forward to seeing Chris Brown play as well. I wouldn’t mind seeing Andy Jones AND Chris Brown make the roster. Jason Witten (a recent LinkedIn connect of mine!!!) as expected, will be held out tonight. It should be exciting the see how Witten has mentored Rico Gathers. Hopefully, he gets some valuable time without Jason Witten or Gavin Escobar in the lineup.

Offensive line

It is interesting to see how the offensive line reserves such as Chaz Green and Jake Brendel (two recent LinkedIn connects of mine), and Laurence Gibson play. They should play all play.

Defensive line

It will be interesting to see how David Irving and Charles Tapper play. They will both have a big role this season, and that starts tonight trying to put pressure on Jared Goff. In my opinion, they will surprise a lot of people and play very well. Maliek Collins and Benson Mayowa will be out tonight as well. Jack Crawford and Ryan Russell will also see some time.

Linebackers

Sean Lee will also be held out tonight. Anthony Hitchens, Kyle Wilber, Damien Wilson, and Mark Nzeocha will get a lot of reps going after Benny Cunningham and company tonight.

Defensive backs

Morris Claiborne and Byron Jones will continue their work tonight against the Rams. They will show that they are true ball hawks this season as well. Anthony Brown and Kavon Frazier look to show that they were worthy of being drafted. They both look to continue their great offseasons.

Special teams

Dan Bailey, Chris Jones, and Lucky Whitehead will continue to show their great special teams presences.
